PADDLES come in all shapes, sizes and prices.  The length of the paddle is determined by the width of the kayak and your paddling style. The price of the paddle is determined by the material that it is made of.  The wider the kayak the longer the paddle needs to be to reach the water past the side of the boat.  If you paddle aggressively with a high angle entry you will use a shorter paddle, if you paddle with a lower flatter angle you will need a bit of a longer paddle.

There are wider paddle blades for a more aggressive stroke and narrower paddle blades for an easier lower sweeping stroke.

Paddles are made out of a variety of materials – the heavier paddles made out of metal or aluminum tend to be less expensive.  You can get paddles made out of aluminum, wood, fiberglass or a carbon fiber composite.  The price traditionally goes up as the weight goes down.  They will all push your kayak forward with more or less effort depending upon the weight.

Kayak Paddles

PFD – PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE (LIFE JACKET)  is a required piece of equipment.  You must have one on the kayak – some states require you to wear it – others just ask that you have it onboard and accessible. The PFD’S  that are designed for paddling are a lot more comfortable than those that are generic for all boating purposes. The paddling PFD’s are cut away so you have a good range of motion without chafing. Some have a mesh liner and air vents so they are cooler and comfortable to wear while paddling.

WHISTLE– is a required item to be carried on the kayak.  I usually attach it to the zipper pull of the PFD so it is always with you.

Plastic Whistle
All Directional Navigational Boat Light

ALL AROUND WHITE LIGHT is another requirement if you are out after dark.  A flashlight works well as it can be turned on and directed where needed.  You can also purchase navigation lights that can be attached to the deck of your kayak.

DRY BAGS & CASES come in all sizes and are handy for your cell phone or other items that you want to stay dry.

Dry Bag

BILGE PUMP AND PADDLE FLOAT  are a must if you are paddling a sit in kayak as they will help get the water out of the boat if you do have a capsize or take a wave and a paddle float is a self rescue tool that makes getting back in the kayak a lot easier.  You can find instructions for both on line.
